Prof. Charles
Griffiths is the Director of Marine Biology Research Institute and a full Professor
of Zoology at the University of Cape Town, RSA. During his teaching and research
career spanning more than 3 decades, Pof. Griffiths supervised 27 M. Sc. dissertations
and 14 Ph. D. theses, with 11 more (7 for M.Sc. and 4 for Ph.D.) working now
under his guidance. His research career is no less illustrious: he is the author
of 116 research articles, 102 conference presentations, 4 guide books on South
African fauna, 8 book chapters and 36 semi-popular scientific articles. He is
an experienced taxonomist and author of papers describing 100 species new to
science (a rare achievement in the 21st century). His current research interests
are documentation of marine biodiversity in Africa and analysis of the threats
to biodiversity, especially those posed by marine invasive aliens. He is also
a serious natural history photographer, with over 2000 images published in a
wide variety of textbooks, magazines, advertisements and calendars. Prof. Griffiths
is also the chairperson of the Sub-Sahara Africa CoML.
