Natural Geography in Shore Areas (NaGISA)
Implementation of NaGISA activities in the Indian Ocean region began with the
identification of Dr. Edward Kimani from Kenya Marine Fisheries Research Institute
as the regional co-ordinator. Along with this, a training workshop on protocol
for observations was organized at Mombasa (Kenya) in June 2006.
Dr. Patricia Miloslavich conducted the training and the trainees had the opportunity
to actually collect and analyze the samples from a seagrass bed and a rocky
shore. At the conclusion of the training some participants volunteered to establish
NaGISA sites in their countries.
Dr. Kimani represented Indian Ocean NaGISA program in the joint meeting of the Steering Committees of Indian Ocean CoML and Sub-Sahara Africa CoML at Tanzania (Sep 2006), in the NaGISA world Congress (15-18 October 2006) and in the Steering Committee meeting for NaGISA (19 October 2006), both at Kobe, Japan. He is currently working towards enabling the countries in the region to establish NaGISA sites and develop a strategy to assure sustained sampling through years.
